WC JUNE 23

I was so embarrassed recently to arrive at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, at 7-45 for what I thought was an 8pm show featuring Jeffrey Holland and his tribute to Stan Laurel. I did not go in as the show was for just an hour. I had been to London to interview him a week or two earlier. The following morning I went to his Carisbrooke hotel to apologise. Luckily, he was at the Kings on Monday June 23 and I was delighted to nip over and catch his marvellous show. There was a happy ending – and he was surprised to see me there.

I am trying to tempt three famous actors on to John Hannam Meets. My requests have all gone in and I am awaiting the good or bad news.

There is some really exciting news which could mean I might achieve one of my few remaining ambitions. All may be revealed by the end of next week.

Went to the IW Radio Locals Hero Awards on Thursday night at the Cowes Yacht Haven, which were well hosted by Paul Topping. An enjoyable evening and some excellent food. As usual, I shed a few tears at some of the emotional stories of young Island youngsters who are so brave. I left just wondering why young people want background music so loud you can barely hear yourself talk to the person next to you? Perhaps I am now an old fart. I do like loud music but at the right time and place.

The following night I saw the best production I have seen for several years from the West Wight’s Curtain Up theatre group. It was comedy at its very best – and so well performed.

Saturday was rather busy. A morning run across the downs around Niton and Blackgang. In the afternoon I saw Cats, performed by Wight Stars at the Medina Theatre, in which I saw a few really exciting talents.

I managed to see a bit of Brazil v Chile, although I don’t normally watch two foreign teams play each other, before heading to the Bembridge Coast Hotel to review a show for The Stage. I was not impressed with Bobby Socks and the Blue Jeans. I think I will leave it there.
