WC July 7

It’s been a hectic week with members of the family staying. I had tried to keep the week clear but, as to be expected, things just turn up. It looks like a guest I have been chasing for many years might well now be in line for an interview. Fingers crossed!

On Monday I went to Warner’s, Bembridge, to catch up with one of their resident entertainers – Hannah Robinson. She has a great personality and will soon be heard on John Hannam Meets.

On Tuesday I went to Ryde School to see Guys and Dolls – and, once again, came away highly impressed. One of the best all-amateur musicals I have seen produced on the Island for some time.. My daughter was having dinner with friends in Haylands and I picked her up on the way home. When they told me it was Brazil 1 Germany 7, I thought it was a wind-up. I was happier seeing local talent than two foreign football teams.

On Wednesday I finally caught up with Paul Howe, who grew up in Totland. He’s got a great story following his 20 years in America. Another local boy makes good. Listen out for him soon on John Hannam Meets – and he has some memorable stories. Earlier in the day I went to the home of a guy called Brian Morey. What an experience that was! You can find out in the August Beacon when he is my Sport Personality.

It was a brilliant Thursday with a visit to Castle Haven, with my daughter and girlfriend. Nearing the end of the long walk up the hill I met an old friend and we ended up having drinks in his lovely garden. I try and not to miss a trick – and I found out his son is a professional writer for television. Within 15 minutes of him joining us – he had agreed to come on my radio show. The early part of the evening was not so good and the low spot of the week. Caroline, my daughter, fancied a fish supper and we chose the New Inn at Shalfleet. What a mistake that was! Poor service, a long wait, later customers served first and some of the veg almost came too late to eat with the dinner. Not a smile or any personality from the staff and no apologies for the long wait. The late evening walk to Shalfleet Harbour did cheer us up so much.
